New electron microscopes advance materials and life sciences research
Sep 04 2025
Thermo Fisher Scientific has introduced two new electron microscopes designed to make high-performance imaging more accessible across academic and industrial research. The launch of the Thermo Scientific™ Scios™ 3 focused ion beam scanning electron microscope (FIB-SEM) and the Thermo Scientific Talos™ 12 transmission electron microscope (TEM) broadens opportunities for innovation in materials and life sciences.
The Scios 3 FIB-SEM incorporates advances in column performance and automation to streamline lamella preparation and site-specific analysis. These improvements enhance throughput and reproducibility while simplifying operation for microscopists at all levels of experience. “Researchers across the globe are pushing the limits of materials discovery in areas ranging from clean energy to digital technologies,” said David Wall, Vice President and General Manager of Materials Science at Thermo Fisher. “Scios 3 delivers the productivity and reliability required to keep pace with this accelerating demand.”
The Talos 12 TEM builds on the established Talos platform with a more compact footprint, next-generation enclosure, and intuitive workflows. Supporting applications from routine cell imaging to cryo-EM and AI-assisted characterisation, Talos 12 lowers barriers for adoption while maintaining high-quality imaging and reproducibility. Remote operation further extends its utility for collaborative projects. “With Talos 12, we are making transmission electron microscopy accessible to a wider community of researchers,” added Trisha Rice, Vice President and General Manager of Life Sciences at Thermo Fisher.
Together, the Scios 3 and Talos 12 reflect Thermo Fisher’s commitment to enabling broader use of advanced microscopy technologies, helping scientists accelerate discovery across disciplines.
