Centrifuge
Sustainable centrifuges with eco-friendly cooling
Dec 05 2025
Thermo Fisher Scientific has launched the Thermo Scientific™ X and S Series general-purpose centrifuges, combining versatility, performance, and sustainability to meet the needs of modern laboratories. These centrifuges feature a next-generation natural refrigerant cooling system that complies with European Union and US Environmental Protection Agency F-gas regulations. At the core of the new models is Thermo Scientific™ GreenCool™ Technology, which uses hydrocarbon cooling (R290) with a Global Warming Potential of just 3, a substantial reduction compared with previous systems that had a GWP of 1,430. The units are more energy-efficient than earlier models, designed for long-term reliability, and manufactured at Thermo Fisher’s certified zero-waste facility in Osterode am Harz, Germany, powered entirely by renewable electricity.
These centrifuges have a 4-litre capacity and provide exceptional rotor performance. They can be equipped with Thermo Scientific™ Fiberlite™ Carbon Fiber Rotors, which weigh up to 60% less than aluminium alternatives. This allows faster acceleration and deceleration, reduces energy consumption per run, and supports a broad range of laboratory workflows. Advanced safety features, ergonomic designs, and flexible configurations make these centrifuges suitable for medical research, biopharma, diagnostics, cell and gene therapy, and quality control laboratories.
Noreen Hong, Vice President and General Manager of Growth, Protection, and Separation at Thermo Fisher Scientific, said, “At Thermo Fisher, sustainability is embedded in every part of the product journey. The X and S Series enable our customers to carry out critical work while reducing environmental impact. We continue to lead in centrifugation by offering high-quality solutions that combine performance, safety, and sustainability.”
In March 2025, Thermo Fisher introduced the Cryofuge™, BIOS, and LYNX™ floor-model centrifuges, which were the first to incorporate the next-generation natural refrigerant cooling system and now replace the previous Sorvall models. The X and S Series are compatible with multiple rotor options, feature fast, ergonomic rotor exchange and biocontainment lids, and offer intuitive touchscreen or LCD interfaces, providing laboratories with flexible, efficient, and sustainable centrifugation solutions across a wide range of applications, from molecular biology to clinical diagnostics.
