Advancing handheld Raman spectroscopy for safer and more efficient chemical identification

Metrohm has introduced the TacticID-1064 ST, an advanced handheld Raman spectrometer designed to enhance material identification in the chemical industry. This device features innovative see-through technology, allowing the analysis of substances directly through various packaging materials, including bottles, envelopes, and dense chemical storage containers. Using a 1064 nm laser and specialised data algorithms, the spectrometer effectively separates the spectral signatures of containers from their contents, ensuring accurate identification while minimising operator exposure to potentially hazardous materials.

With an extensive Raman library containing over 26,000 compounds, the TacticID-1064 ST enables rapid identification of a wide range of chemicals. Its compact, ergonomic design and user-friendly interface, which includes both a touchscreen and tactile buttons, ensure ease of operation in various environments, even when operators are wearing protective equipment. Swappable batteries further support extended field use, reducing downtime and enhancing operational efficiency.

This spectrometer is particularly valuable in quality control, material identification, and hazardous material response, where precise and swift identification is essential. The see-through capability not only improves safety by reducing the need for direct contact with unknown substances but also streamlines workflows, leading to faster decision-making and improved efficiency.

The TacticID-1064 ST offers several key advantages. Its 1064 nm laser significantly reduces fluorescence interference, making it ideal for identifying substances such as dyes, pigments, and heavily processed materials within complex chemical matrices. For raw material identification, it confirms the identity and quality of incoming substances, preventing production errors and accelerating quality control processes with instant results at the point of receipt. The device can analyse both liquids and solids using see-through technology to measure samples inside sealed containers.

Designed for ease of use, the spectrometer features an intuitive touchscreen interface with guided workflows, allowing quick and efficient analysis with minimal training, making it accessible even to non-scientists. It also enhances safety by identifying hazardous chemicals, preventing accidental exposure or mixing, and detecting chemical leaks or spills for rapid containment and response.

For emergency scenarios, the TacticID-1064 ST plays a critical role in identifying unknown chemicals during incidents, supporting rapid response efforts and minimising downtime and safety risks. Additionally, it includes comprehensive spectral libraries with more than 20,000 spectral entries covering organic chemicals, solvents, and polymers. Users can also customise libraries and create their own for specific applications.

Metrohm’s TacticID-1064 ST represents a significant advancement in handheld Raman spectroscopy, providing the chemical industry with a reliable, non-invasive tool for accurate material identification across a wide range of critical applications.
