Enhance emulsion stability and product quality with Silverson High Shear Mixers

Silverson High Shear Mixers have been sold all over the world to various companies ranging from small start-up to large international brands. The advantage of a Silverson over simple agitators and stirrers stems from the specially designed rotor/stator workhead; the high speed rotation of the rotor blades draws materials into the workhead where they are intensively mixed, before being projected back into the body of the mix at high velocity.  With this method, ingredients are fully incorporated and any agglomerates are eliminated.

A customer using conventional agitators were unsatisfied with the quality of their end product as the emulsion was unstable and it was lacking the desired ‘glossy’ appearance that the company wanted to achieve. They were also having trouble incorporating all the raw materials. The product contained a mixture of waxes, Petroleum solvents, oils, an emulsifier and polishing powder. The agitator did not produce enough shear to form a stable emulsion causing the end product to separate and they had additional problems with aeration in the mix.

The customer contacted Silverson Machines, a trial was set up to test their mixture using the Silverson L5M-A model, the latest development in high shear laboratory mixing.  These trials were very successful, and the mixer was able to incorporate all of the different raw materials and blend them efficiently in a short period of time. The circulatory pattern of mixing created by the Silverson rotor/stator workhead is all below the surface, which eliminated the problem they’d been having with aeration.

The high shear energy introduced into the mix by the L5M-A rotor/stator workhead resulted in a high quality, stable emulsion with the desired glossy appearance. This was confirmed when the emulsion was tested and images showed the droplet sizes were uniformly dispersed at the range of 2-5um. The stark difference between the results from the agitator and the Silverson laboratory mixer could clearly be observed based on the physical appearance of the end-product.
