Photonics and nanotechnology feature in Aston University laboratory news

Laboratory news from Aston University reveals a focus on nanotechnology and photonics in upcoming research from the academic institution.

Already its scientists have developed the world's longest optical fibre, at 270 km, which it is hoped will have implications for secure communications and long-distance networking.

Meanwhile, carbon nanotubes could provide new methods of networking, or of carrying power, thanks to their excellent conductivity and strength.

Now laboratory news from the institution reveals plans to continue with studies of extra-long fibre optic-based lasers and development of carbon nanotubes.

Professor Sergei Turitysn of the university's Photonics Research Group says: "These projects will help foster international research collaborations with overseas centres of excellence in photonics and nanotechnologies."

Aston University says its research focuses on studies that can make a beneficial and substantial difference to people, businesses and society in general.

It adds that its reputation is that of a groundbreaking and innovative research facility.
