Novel cancer treatment identified

Posted by Ben Evens

Scientists have made a breakthrough in pioneering work for the treatment of cancer.

ImmunAid Pty have been awarded a European patent for its work with cancer, which involved monitoring the immune cycle of individual patients to determine the best time to administer treatment.

"The discovery of the regulated immune response cycle in cancer patients is potentially of immense clinical significance with profound public health implications," Dr Svetomir Markovic, chair of the Melanoma Group at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

Research by the scientists determined that the immune system of all cancer patients moves in a repeating cycle, highlighting that administering treatment at key points in this cycle can significantly improve their clinical outcome.

Further investigation is underway into the cyclic treatment process, including into other types of cancer as well as diseases such as multiple sclerosis and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

Recently, researchers at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center found that a key protein plays a surprising role in cancer formation.
