How To Make Your Own Snow This Christmas
Dec 27 2014
There’s nothing quite as quintessentially festive as a white Christmas. Yet no matter how hard you wish sometimes it just refuses to snow. Whether you’re spending December 25 in the balmy Southern Hemisphere or Mother Nature simply refuses to cooperate, we’ve got a recipe that’s guaranteed to make it snow! Unlike other fads and store bought products this homemade gem is a wonderfully realistic replica of the real life version.
What you’ll need
To create the most life like snow possible our ingredients are all 100% natural. In fact, the only element you’ll need to get your hands on is cold water. As well as H20 you’ll also need to buy or rent a pressure nozzle.
If you want to really master the art of snow making check out this useful weather tool that will let you know how ideal your meteorological conditions are. Keep in mind that in some climates the weather may be too hot to make snow which means you’ll have to create your flurry in an air-conditioned room.
Choosing your pressure nozzle
When choosing a pressure nozzle you’ve got a few different options. Pressure washers can be bought or rented and fitted with a fine mist nozzle. Snow cannons can be rented for relatively affordable prices while garden hoses equipped with a snow cannon create less snow but are easy to use and assemble.
Making the snow
Despite popular belief making snow is actually surprisingly easy. All you have to do is use your nozzle to spray fine mist into the air which rapidly cools down and freezes into DIY snow. Here’s how!
- For best results aim your nozzle upwards at a 45° angle. This maximised the amount of air that’s mixed with the water and creates a heightened snow making effect.
- Always make sure the water you use is as cold as possible. Source H2O from a cold tap, fridge or outdoor water source.
- If possible source water from a stream or river. The impurities will act as nucleation sites which foster the growth of snow crystals. This can also be achieved by adding a non-toxic polymer nucleating agent to water.
Don’t forget that you’ll only need a few hours of cold weather to create a magical snow storm! As soon as the temperature drops whip out your DIY snow making kit and turn your home or backyard into a winter wonderland!
