Analysis of EtG/EtS in urine by extracting samples with an anion exchange SPE column followed by LC-MS/MS

Determination of ethanol is one of the most common analyses in forensic toxicology laboratories.  Most forensic toxicology laboratories measure parent and metabolite concentrations of a variety of drugs in biological samples.  However, the measurement of the metabolites of ethanol is rarely performed.  This simple and robust procedure can assist forensic analysts in the quantification of EtG/EtS in Urine samples.  The method is based on the employment of anion solid phase extraction, Clean-Up extraction columns, to produce clean extracts for analysis by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry.  This method may be useful when applied to cases where ethanol in urine samples was negative, but had been suspected.
