Specialist microscope laboratory opens

Harvard University has opened a new laboratory with 12 advanced microscopes.

The local Crimson paper noted that the president of the academic institution, Drew Faust, was on hand to cut the ribbon for the Center for Biological Imaging.

According to the news provider, the facility will offer leased equipment to researchers across campuses through a partnership with optical device manufacturer Carl Zeiss MicroImaging.

Commenting at the launch, Ms Faust said: "Not only does the Center for Biological Imaging have state-of-the-art Zeiss imaging equipment, it will continue to have that equipment under the very special agreement that Zeiss and MCB have agreed upon."

The scheme will see old microscope technology replaced by newer models, while those looking to use the technology will need to pay a membership fee similar to a gym.

Last month, a microscopy lab was opened in Dublin, the Irish Independent reported, which took three years to construct at a cost of approximately €12 million (£10.4 million).
