Clinical laboratory IT solutions 'could spot the unusual'

Clinical laboratory IT solutions capable of 'seeing' like humans can - and spotting anything that looks out of the ordinary - could arise from research at the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Information Technology.

Scientists at the institution have worked on a project intended to create IT-based ways of "attending and recognising instances of salient events" under the Smart Eyes banner.

Their findings could help to produce clinical laboratory IT solutions with the ability to highlight interesting features in processes that might otherwise go unnoticed.

For instance, the researchers suggest that a human observer might find it difficult to spot a brawl erupting among a large crowd of celebrating football fans.

But Smart Eyes aims to identify minor differences in behaviour, alerting security officials to the developing violence.

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft responds to research commissions from industrial customers with the intention of yielding rapid and instantly applicable solutions to external needs and desires.
