Infrared (IR)
Traditional techniques to assess moisture, protein, fat, and ash in pet food are often both time-consuming and labour-intensive. In contrast, NIRS offers a rapid, non-destructive alternative, delivering results in around one minute, all with minimal preparation.
In a study, 199 dried dog and cat food samples from various suppliers were analysed using the OMNIS NIR Analyser Solid. The system measured a mix of both whole and ground samples in diffuse reflection mode, with rotating sample cups to ensure representative spectra. Calibration models were then developed by correlating NIR spectral data with reference values obtained through established ISO methods.
The results not only demonstrated a strong prediction performance for critical quality parameters, but they also highlight the significant time savings NIRS provides in comparison to standard ISO methods, reducing multi-hour laboratory procedures to a single rapid scan.
With a pre-calibrated NIRS model available for pet food, Metrohm's OMNIS NIR is an effective solution for routine quality control, helping manufacturers meet regulatory standards whilst also optimising production efficiency.
