Premium Chromatography Media for TLC and HPTLC
Feb 27 2019
Depending on the application, users of thin-layer chromatography (TLC) either want economical aluminium and polyester sheets or robust TLC glass plates for reliable analysis. MACHEREY-NAGEL - manufacturer of TLC products since 1961 - offers premium chromatography media for thin-layer chromatography.
TLC aluminium and polyester sheets
Thin-layer chromatography is a widely used technique in routine analysis. Especially for qualitative analyses in organic synthesis economical aluminium or polyester sheets are used.
ALUGRAM® Xtra SIL G, silica 60 coated aluminium sheets, are easy and reliable to cut due to an optimised binder system. Furthermore, the silica layer shows an excellent separation efficiency and reproducibility from lot to lot.
POLYGRAM® SIL G are silica 60 coated polyester sheets with a binder system, completely stable in purely aqueous eluents. Both kind of sheets are available with or without UV indicator.
For high performance thin-layer chromatography (HPTLC) ALUGRAM® Xtra sheets are coated with Nano-SIL G silica gel. The narrow fractionation of the particles allows sharper separations, shorter developing times and an increased detection sensitivity compared to conventional silica layers.
Modified silicas like RP-18 W (octadecyl-modified HPTLC silica layer) and further adsorbents like Alox N (aluminium oxide), CEL 300 (native fibrous cellulose) or POLYAMIDE-6 (ε-polycaprolactame) are also available on economical aluminium or polyester sheets.
TLC and HPTLC glass plates
Glass plates are mostly used for clinical, pharmaceutical, natural product and food analysis. Especially in instrumental thin-layer chromatography glass plates provide an advantageous handling. Furthermore, the photometric quantification of analytes is more accurate.
The established ADAMANT glass plates exhibit an outstanding hardness and abrasion resistance of the layer due to an improved binder system. This allows labelling the plates.
The well-known SIL G plates show an alternative selectivity compared to other commercial silica plates. By using these plates previous separation problems can possibly be solved.
Nowadays, developments of new TLC plates are very rare. However, MACHEREY-NAGEL recently launched the new TLC glass plates SIL HD as well as Nano-SIL HD plates for HPTLC. These silica 60 plates are characterised by 'High Definition' properties at the detection with UV light. Moreover, TLC users benefit from excellent staining properties for post-chromatographic detection using spray reagents.
Additional to unmodified TLC and HPTLC layers, silicas with modifications like C18, NH2, CN as well as other variations feature different selectivities. Aluminium oxide, cellulose, polyamide and layers for special separations (e.g. CHIRALPLATE) complete the broad range of MACHEREY-NAGEL glass plates.
