Economics Drives Thailand Led Laboratory Market in ASEAN

Thailand, the 2nd largest economy in South East Asia, promotes foreign investment with new S curve structure towards innovative, digital and research based economy, leading the country to the new dimension of laboratory, biotechnology and life science investment in ASEAN.

The Thailand government and private companies potentially spend 130,000 MB or 1% GDP on R&D Expenditure in 2016. It is predilection that following technology acquisition and support by the government, the private sector embraces more investment to enhance their innovation, standards and production. The value of R&D expenditure can also be increased by the expenditure on quality control and quality assurance, requiring high number of instruments and tools as well as consumable equipment. Importantly, the government’s mega projects, such as, the Thailand Science Park Development plan, Economic Zones of Innovation (EZI), Food Innopolis and ongoing support for R&D ecosystems encourage greater application of laboratory instruments and equipment.  As a result, Thailand now becomes the leading country for laboratory market.

Thailand has earned their economy growth in recent years thanks to integration of the South East Asia’s single market or Asian Economic Community (AEC).  South East Asia’s 10 countries, the world's ninth-largest economy, have a combined gross domestic product (GDP) of $1.9 trillion with more than 600 million populations. Over the past decade, the 10 countries have averaged a growth rate of more than 5% per year.
