Computing Can Make a Difference Lectures Emphasise

School pupils from across Tayside and Fife, along with  students from Dundee and Angus College learnt about leading -edge research and how they could make a difference in a technology industry increasingly dominated by global giants, from computer experts and researchers during  annual Christmas Lectures hosted by the University of Dundee’s School of Computing (December 16th).

Subjects included an examination of news in the digital age, devices to combat potentially fatal freshwater contaminants, and how technology can help older and disabled people. Undergraduate students also led a question-and-answer session to help give the pupils a flavour of what studying computing involves.

Speaking about the lectures Dr Karen Petrie, one of the event organisers said:  “As always we are delighted to welcome so many pupils to our Christmas Lectures. One of the talks this year focuses on how you can make a difference in today's tech world dominated by the likes of Google and Apple, and that is a key feature of all our work.

“We want to get across the message that the individual does have a major role to play in shaping the future of computing and ensuring that the potential of technology is used to help people and groups across the world. The lectures and demonstrations will introduce some of the science and engineering behind computing and hopefully encourage young people to consider studying the subject at University.”
