A41 Funding supports SWIR Technology Development

Aug 29 2022

British nanomaterials innovator Quantum Science Ltd has secured part of £3 million funding under the seventh round of Innovate UK’s Analysis for Innovators (A4I) competition, which will substantial boost its work developing and commercialising patented INFIQ® quantum dot (QD) technology. This approach in advancing short-wave infrared (SWIR) sensing and imaging technology could generate a huge jump in intelligent and ambient technology for mass markets, including next-generation medical imaging, sensors for self-driving cars, 3D mapping for smartphones and more.

The award is the latest mark of recognition for INFIQ® QDs, which has attracted intense interest from a range of industries. The company recently made significant advances in its development of lead-free QDs and the formulation of QD inks.

Dr Hao Pang, Quantum Science CEO and founder, welcomed the news stating, “Everyone at QS believes INFIQ® technology has the potential to disrupt several multi-billion USD markets and it is immensely gratifying to see our belief supported by another A4I grant. As we are working on such a ground-breaking project, many of the challenges we face are completely novel. This funding is vital for helping us overcome these challenges on the road to mass market commercialisation and adoption.”

Having previously received funding under round six, this latest grant will support development into the measurement of nanoscale surfaces in collaboration with the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) – one of the most prestigious laboratories in the UK and regarded as the gold standard in measurement science. The funding scheme provides businesses access to world-leading experts and cutting-edge facilities and techniques to solve existing analysis or measurement problems.

Dr Pang added, “Our existing relationship with the NPL is very strong following our previous A4I funding win. It has already provided crucial insights into our unique INFIQ® materials and their valuable properties and we expect this latest award will turbocharge our innovative processes as we bridge the gap between lab scale and the mass market production.”
