International Acclaim for ESBES Conference

Details of keynote presentations along with the full programme for the European Symposium of Biochemical Engineering Sciences (ESBES) is now available, featuring over 150 high-level talks and technical presentations. The event takes place 11-14 September, in Dublin, Ireland.

Over 250 abstracts, with contributions spanning Europe, Asia, USA, Australasia and South America, are reflected in this international symposium. Biopharmaceuticals is a stand-out theme at the conference with various oral presentations focusing on cell culture, single-use processing and high throughput technologies. Plenary sessions from Dr Steve Bagshaw, CEO of Fujifilm Diosynth Biotechnologies, will examine the role industrialists play in working towards a global bioenconomy. Professor Massimo Morbidelli from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, will also discuss new developments in bio-pharmaceutical production.

Following the climate change talks in Paris last year, which identified the importance of alternative energy sources, bio fuels, bioenergy and renewables are also key topics for the event. Professor Lisbeth Olsson will present a plenary talk on the current challenges and opportunities associated with designing new processes for a bio-based economy. This is followed by a dedicated parallel session on bioenergy, featuring speakers from industry and academia.

There will also be a focus on the work of early career researchers at the meeting. The Biochemical Engineering Journal Young Researcher and the ESBES Malcolm Lilly Award will both be presented during the event. Delegates will also have the opportunity for Networking and participation in a ‘Jobs Forum’ with industry specialists.

Professor Jarka Glassey, ESBES conference chair said; “The symposium series has gone from strength-to-strength since its first meeting in 1996. We received abstract submissions from 36 countries around the world this year. Dublin will welcome participants from as far as New Zealand, Indonesia, India, Brazil, Mexico, USA and Canada, in addition from participants from Europe.

The quality of the submissions was exceptionally high, and the scientific committee had a difficult task of selecting the best of these for oral presentations. However the result has been a very exciting programme, showcasing the very best in biochemical engineering research.”
