Collaboration to Advance Regenerative Medicine and GCT Research

Hitachi Ltd has partnered with Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH) to establish a joint research initiative focused on gene and cell therapy (GCT) for conquering challenging diseases. This collaboration, which brings together Hitachi's automated cell culturing and digital technology expertise with the renowned Mass General Brigham healthcare system, aims to accelerate the development of disease models and expand the practical applications of GCT across various medical conditions.

Through close collaboration with researchers at the Mass General Brigham Gene and Cell Therapy Institute (GCTI), Hitachi will contribute to the development of cellular models for studying diseases. By establishing accurate disease ‘models’ that simulate the behaviour of CAR-T cells on cancer cells in a laboratory environment, the efficacy and safety of therapies can be predicted before in-human clinical trials. The joint research endeavour seeks to create new disease models and broaden the scope of GCT applications.

Additionally, Hitachi will leverage its experience and achievements in regenerative medicine and GCT to advance cell culturing and the associated processes required for GCT. The company is actively developing highly efficient techniques for creating genetically modified cells, which will be applied in collaboration with researchers and pharmaceutical companies in the United States and worldwide to develop new therapies.

Roger Hajjar, MD, Head of the Mass General Brigham GCTI, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, stating, "We welcome Hitachi as our first industry collaborator and look forward to jointly accelerating the development and early commercialisation of GCT using Hitachi's innovative platform."

Mass General Brigham is a leading ecosystem for GCT research and clinical trials, with over 400 researchers dedicated to ground-breaking gene and cell therapy investigations in pursuit of potential cures.
