UKTI and NanoKTN showcased best in UK nanotechnology
The Nanotechnology Knowledge Transfer Network (NanoKTN), one of the UK’s primary knowledge-based networks for Micro and Nanotechnologies and UK Trade Investment hosted the prestigious Business Innovation Awards 2009 at UK NanoForum and Emerging Technologies 2009 conference in November. The competition recognises the top three innovative organisations in the UK’s emerging technology communities that have made major steps towards real innovative applications.

The Business Innovation Award Winners are:
Life Sciences and Healthcare: University College London (UCL) Centre for Regerative Medicine. Materials Devices: Promethean Particles. Energy and Environment: AM Technology.

Sir Andrew Cahn, Chief Executive of UK Trade Investment, commented, “These awards recognise the best of British innovation. Winners of last year’s awards won an opportunity to network in Japan and recognition from Number 10. The UK’s success in nanotechnology is admired around the globe, with firms from the US, Europe, Russia and China on constant lookout for potential partners. In a competitive marketplace, this award could give your firm the edge.”

Victor Higgs, Director of Applied Nanodetectors and 2008 winner of the Business Innovation Awards said, “We received the Business Innovation Award in the category of Intelligent Connected World and this gave our company an immediate competitive advantage, improving our company credibility and awareness on an International scale. As a consequence, we were able to find new business relationships in the Far East.”

Director of The NanoKTN, Alec Reader added, “Successful commercial uptake of new technologies is vital to the wealth creating power of the UK and nanotechnologies are leading the way in delivering the UK’s wealth creation in the next 20 years.

Light Source facilities represent a significant commercial, technological and scientific opportunity. This meeting, organised by the Sensors & Instrumentation KTN in partnership with the Science & Technology Facilities Council (STFC), will provide a networking forum for manufacturers, researchers and academics with interests in this field. Technical developments will be shared and delegates will hear about instrumentation requirements from novel light sources in research institutes. The speaking panel features representatives from Diamond Light Source, Dexela, Quantum Detectors and Phase Focus.
