Keele University analytical science apprenticeships earn Ofsted accreditation with backing from leading professional societies

Keele University’s masters-level apprenticeship programme has achieved a significant milestone, securing its second Ofsted accreditation in just eight months. The Biomedical Science specialism of the Research Scientist Apprenticeship has been officially accredited in collaboration with the Royal Society of Biology, marking the first qualification nationally developed with the society’s input.

This follows the programme’s Analytical Science pathway, which was developed with the Royal Society of Chemistry, and accredited in March 2024.

The Research Scientist Apprenticeships are a paid route to receiving a degree within a so-called ‘earn while you learn’ model. Workplace experience is combined with academic study towards the final qualification.

These programmes are designed to develop technical leaders of the future, equipping apprentices with advanced scientific knowledge, hands-on skills, and professional behaviours to excel in their careers.

Graduates of the programme receive an MSc in Technical Leadership and can currently choose between two specialism pathways, Biomedical Science or Analytical Science, with a Specialist Data Processing due to come onstream in the coming months.

Dr. Chrystelle Egger, Senior Lecturer in Chemical Sciences at Keele University, highlighted the programme’s impact on vocational education. "This recognition from two prestigious professional societies underscores the programme's ability to create critical thinkers and problem-solvers who excel in their fields," she said.

"Unlike traditional Masters programmes, this apprenticeship integrates professional competencies with rigorous academic study, driving innovation and career advancement. Many apprentices secure promotions during or soon after completing their studies, showcasing the programme’s success in enhancing employability."
