2019 RMS Medal Awards: Nominations Open

The Royal Microscopical Society is now inviting nominations for its 2019 RMS Medal Series. The Medals award outstanding scientific achievements in all branches of microscopy as well as recognising the unsung heroes in support and technician roles, along with individuals who volunteer a huge amount of time and energy to the Society. The Medal Series includes the following:

RMS President’s Medal for Services to the Society

The RMS President’s Medal recognises exceptional voluntary contribution to the work of the RMS, for example through work on an RMS committee, or through any other form of contribution. Nominations will be considered by a committee comprised of the President and Vice-Presidents and the winner will receive complimentary registration to mmc where they will be presented with their medal.

RMS Vice-Presidents' Medal for Microscopy Research and Laboratory Support

The Vice-Presidents' Medal recognises the “unsung heroes” of microscopy by making an award to an engineer, technician or laboratory research support scientist who has made an outstanding contribution to furthering the science of microscopy. Nominees may come from a wide range of possible backgrounds, including academia, research institutions or industry; applicants may self-nominate or be nominated by a colleague or collaborator.

Nominations for these two Medals should be in the form of a supporting letter, addressed to Debbie Hunt and submitted by 30 April 2018.

In addition to the Society awards, each Scientific Section of the Society has its own award:

RMS Alan Agar Medal for Electron Microscopy

The aim of the award is to celebrate and mark outstanding scientific achievements applying electron microscopy in the field of physical or life sciences. The winner will have established a track record of exceptional microscopy, thereby promoting electron microscopy to the scientific community. The award is open to active researchers who mainly use electron microscopy to investigate cutting edge scientific questions. The committee will also consider applicants who have developed novel EM techniques (including sample preparation procedures) or have demonstrated innovative use of electron microscopes. The award will normally be made to nominees who have engaged in independent research for less than 10 years.

RMS Medal for Life Sciences

The aim of the award is to celebrate and mark outstanding scientific achievements applying microscopy in the field of cell biology. The award will normally be made to nominees who have engaged in independent research for less than 10 years. .

RMS Medal for Light Microscopy

The aim of the award is to celebrate and mark outstanding scientific achievements applying or developing new forms of light microscopy. The award will normally be made to nominees who have engaged in independent research for less than 10 years.

. RMS Medal for Innovation in Applied Microscopy for Materials Science

The aim of the award is to celebrate and mark outstanding scientific achievements in applying microscopy in the field of materials. The award is open to both new and established researchers who have supported or worked in Materials Microscopy and have advanced research and understanding in the field of material sciences. The award will normally be made to nominees who have engaged in independent research for less than 10 years.

RMS Medal for Scanning Probe Microscopy

award celebrates outstanding progress made in the field of scanning probe microscopy (SPM), through the application of SPM to reveal new insights in the fields of physical or life sciences or through the development of SPM technology and techniques. The winner will be recognised as an emerging leader in SPM through their independent research. The award will normally be made to nominees who have engaged in independent research for less than 10 years.

7. The Pearse Prize

This is awarded to a scientist who has made a valuable contribution either to the development of a new technique or through the application of existing methods. The Prize is seen to be one of the international honours in cell biology with an emphasis on microscopy.

Nominations for any of the Science Section Medals should again be sent to Debbie Hunt.

All awards are open to applicants worldwide and will take the form of a certificate and medal. Winners may also be invited to produce an article for the RMS in-house Magazine.
