Pancreatic enzyme medication approved by FDA

Approval has been given to Pancreaze Delayed-Release Capsules by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Medication of this kind helps to boost food digestion in patients who are unable to produce enough of their own pancreatic enzymes.

It can therefore be useful for those who have experienced cystic fibrosis, pancreatic tumours, chronic pancreatitis or removal of all or parts of the organ.

The product, manufactured by Johnson & Johnson, is only the third of its kind to be sanctioned for this purpose.

Commenting on the decision, managing director of the FDA's gastroenterology division Donna Griebel said it widens the choice available to individuals and organisations.

"The approval of Pancreaze ... allows patients and healthcare professionals to choose the approved pancreatic enzyme product that is appropriate for them," she remarked.

Last week, the FDA approved the first versions of two drugs for the treatment of hypertension - generic versions of the widely-used Cozaar and Hyzaar tablets.
