IOC to test testosterone levels in women

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) will carry out new testosterone tests to determine whether an athlete can compete as a woman.

Laboratory tests on testosterone were called for after South African runner Caster Semenya was accused of being too masculine when she won the world championship in the 800 meters in 2009. The IOC was heavily criticised for how it handled the case, and has been looking into new tests ever since the incident.

Drawing the line between male and female is one of the most vexing and controversial issues in sports. In order to back its judgement with scientific evidence, the committee has decided to use testosterone levels as a determining factor in tests.

The new screening process will replace the conventional sex-verification test, which was described as an awkward and embarrassing situation for the parties involved. New regulations will test whether a woman’s natural testosterone levels fall within the normal range of a man, though the IOC has yet to reveal what level this will be.

Using blood samples, scientists will test for hyperandrogenism. This involves an excessive production of androgens, and if tested positive, the athlete will not be allowed to compete as a woman.

To be barred, the female must have hyperandrogenism that “confers a competitive advantage”, the IOC said, which means the androgens produce strength, power and speed because the body is receptive to them.

The new policy will be in effect from this summer's Olympics in London. The IOC Medical Commission will be ready to take any cases and begin an investigation into them if any arise at the Games.

However, the tests have not been without criticism. A Stanford bioethicist has challenged the new gender-testing policy, saying that it lacks scientific credibility and could lead to discrimination against women who don't conform to traditional notions of femininity.
