Spectroscopy news: Scientists discover way to nanofocus infrared light

Research groups at NanoGUNE have used tapered transmission lines in order to get the nanofocus - something that could lead to developments in ultra-small spectroscopy tools.
These are based on classic transmission lines - which were once used in televisions and radios - however are built on a much smaller scale and adapted to the infrared frequency range, the research centre reveals.
By tapering the lines, the scientists were able to compress the infrared surface wave to 60 nm in diameter.
"The concept of tapered transmission lines is a promising way to do achieve this. Acting as an ultra-small torch, it conducts infrared light exactly to the spot under analysis," comments Martin Schnell, who worked on the experiments.
Focusing on the development of nanotechnology, NanoGUNE highlights that such scientific developments are an essential factor in developing sustainability.
