Watson-Marlow Fluid Technology Group – Certa Compact

Best sustainability initiative – the GreenLab Award

We currently face the challenge of improving sustainability - saving energy, improving yield and reducing the carbon footprint within processes to meet net zero goals. Efficient fluid management systems are vital for this, and pumps offer a distinct opportunity.

Watson-Marlow Fluid Technology Solutions (WMFTS) expanded its Certa Sine™ pump range with the introduction of the innovative Certa Compact model, designed to deliver both energy and space savings. With a 30% reduction in footprint compared to the standard Certa Sine pumps, the Certa Compact is an ideal solution for applications where space is limited. This compact design not only minimises material usage during manufacturing but also reduces the environmental impact associated with the transportation and installation of larger pumps.

The Certa Compact pump has been designed with efficiency in mind. The pump’s rotor design enables handling of viscosities from 1cP to 8,000,000cP with minimal effect on power requirements, meaning extremely viscous products can be pumped without any significant increase in energy consumption. This means the Certa Compact is able to handle viscous fluids with up to 50% less power consumption compared to traditional pumps. This substantial reduction in energy use results in significant long-term savings, lowering operational costs for end users and contributing to a smaller carbon footprint. Despite its smaller size, the Certa Compact maintains the same high-performance standards as the larger Certa Sine pumps, ensuring optimal results in applications up to 87 PSI without compromising energy efficiency.

Sine pumps, like the Certa Compact, use a sinusoidal rotor that runs with low shear, low pulsation and gentle handling without compromising on power, enabling fast processing without risk of product damage or waste. By maintaining a steady flow rate, the pump saves energy and places less strain on system components, leading to reduced system downtime, fewer repairs, and longer service life—further enhancing the sustainability and cost-efficiency of the processing systems.

The Certa Compact has exceeded expectations by providing a versatile, portable and energy-efficient solution, reducing the need for multiple pumps and minimising the environmental impact associated with traditional equipment. Its stainless-steel construction ensures durability and corrosion resistance, extending its lifespan and reducing the frequency of replacements.

In the long term, the Certa Compact is expected to continue driving energy efficiency, operational savings and sustainability, positioning it as a key component in meeting both economic and environmental goals for industries looking to reduce their carbon footprint and operational costs.

“Unlike our previous pump, the mechanical seal of the Certa Sine pump is much easier to access and manual cleaning of the mechanical seal can be done with minimal effort. In addition, the static flushing of the seal is much easier to carry out and the seal is also easier to control visually.  The Certa pump has been working completely smoothly in the production line to date. The pump has no problems whatsoever handling the viscosity. Plus, the relative ease of disassembly has led to time savings for cleaning and maintenance work.” - customer testimonial
