6G Project strikes Technology Partnerships with Japan and Singapore

Aug 14 2021

During a visit to Asia Tech x Singapore (ATxSG) 2021, representatives of Finland’s 6G Flagship research and development programme reached an agreement (July 13) with Singapore partners on advancing mutually beneficial themes and contributing to the global standardisation and regulatory development of 6G communications.

“The development of global breakthrough technologies, like 6G, always requires international collaboration. Therefore, partnerships with forerunner countries, such as Singapore, are vital for succeeding in 6G competition. Our collaboration will serve all Finnish 6G development when we work with Singapore in themes where mutual benefits can be achieved,” said Matti Latva-aho, Director of 6G Flagship, which is being coordinated by University of Oulu in Finland.

6G Flagship became the first international partner to join Singapore’s future communications programme (FCP), an almost 45 million euros funded initiative, that represents part of the strategy aimed at building resilience into its digital economy.

FCP director Professor Tony Quek, Director of Future Communications R&D Programme at the Singapore University of Technology and Design said: “As a host of the FPC, SUTD will lead and collaborate with world leading research institutions and institutions of higher learning to strengthen Singapore’s 5G ecosystem and accelerate the research and translation of future communications technology.”

6G Flagship also recently signed a memorandum of understanding on technology co-operation with the Japanese Beyond 5G Consortium, consisting of public and private organisations such as SoftBank, the University of Tokyo and the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology. The agreement was announced in connection with Global Digital Summit held in Tokyo in June by Nikkei and the Japanese Ministry of the Interior and Communications.

“It is in Finland’s interest to expand the co-operation to themes where mutual competitive advantage can be achieved for 6G development,” added Latva-aho.

The Finnish 6G project is funded by The Academy of Finland and the University of Oulu.
