UK’s first Equine Scanner Unveiled

Liverpool University’s Institute of Veterinary Science has celebrated the official unveiling of its new equine CT scanner by President of University Council Lord Derby. Approximately 70 guests attended the event at the Leahurst campus where the CT machine has been installed in the Philip Leverhulme Equine Hospital. Adapted from human use, the CT machine is the country’s only large bore, sliding gantry CT system. The installation marks £750,000 investment into the hospital, enhancing the safety and precision techniques for scanning large animals and ensuring accurate prognosis.

Guests including donors, supporters and representatives from key veterinary and equine bodies were formally welcomed to the campus by Professor Susan Dawson, Dean of the Institute of Veterinary Science and Professor Cathy McGowan, Head of the Department of Equine Clinical Science.

Speaking at the event Lord Derby said: “Today we are marking a major advance for equine care, not only in Merseyside but in England as a whole. This exceptional equipment will make a vital contribution to the advancement of the University’s provision both in terms of day-to-day equine care and from a teaching perspective.”
