Malaysian Investment Development Authority chooses Huddersfield
Nov 10 2014
A Malaysian government agency sought the expertise of the University of Huddersfield as part of its drive to boost the country’s advanced manufacturing sector and to strengthen links between scientific researchers and industry.
After requesting a visit, four officials of the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) came to the University and inspected facilities that included its X-ray Diffraction Lab, featuring state-of-the-art Bruker technology, and the International Institute for Accelerator Applications, where they were addressed by the Physicist Professor Bob Cywinski.
One of the main purposes of the delegation on its fact-finding trip to the UK was to learn about current developments in electronics and during the Huddersfield visit they also heard from Dr Peter Mather, who is Course Leader for MEng/BEng and BSc Electronics courses.
The Malaysian party was also interested in industrial collaboration, so the visitors learned about the University’s EPSRC Centre for Innovative Manufacturing in Advanced Metrology, which works closely with a wide range of leading companies. They also took heard about the burgeoning links between the University and the local authority, Kirklees Council.
The party from MIDA consisted of Inon Abdul Hamid, Nurul Zafira Mohd Zamri, Loh Choon Hong and Teagu Vannu Gopal. They were hosted by Ray Dance, of the University’s Research and Enterprise Department and the University’s Director of International Development, Andrew Mandebura.
“The visit was highly successful,” said Mr Dance. “They were very impressed by the University and how it interacts with business. We are looking forward to future contact with MIDA.”
