LHC Hosts Representatives from UK

Representatives from the Scottish Parliament and Welsh and Northern Ireland Assemblies visited CERN in January to witness the important role the UK’s researchers, engineers and universities play in the success of the world’s largest ever experiment

Building on STFC’s 2012-13 ‘LHC on Tour’, the visitors toured CERN’s facilities, accompanied by representatives of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (RSE), the Royal Society for Chemistry (RSChem) and the Institute of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE).

STFC organised the visit to highlight the important role played by universities and researchers from Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland at CERN. As well as meeting CERN staff, researchers and students from their areas, the visitors also inspected the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) ,which sits 100m underneath Switzerland and France, visiting two of the four experiments using the LHC -- ATLAS and LHCb. They also given a rare glimpse of the work of the AntiProton Decelerator, and met the Director-General of CERN, Professor Rolf-Dieter Heuer.
