Expansion of US Manufacturer in Cork to Boost Local Employment

Jan 21 2015

US biopharmaceutical company ABEC has announced plans for expansion of its global operations at Fermoy, Co. Cork, which will see 100 new jobs created over the next two years.  Increased production of engineered process equipment for biopharmaceutical manufacturing and a range of services will be developed place to meet the growing demand from global pharmaceutical and biotech customers. The investment is supported by the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation through IDA Ireland.

The company is to locate in the former 87,000ft2 FCI facility which occupies 13 acres of land on the edge of Fermoy town. Refurbishment works on the facility are underway, as well as recruitment for a range of management, engineering, manufacturing, services, and business development personnel.  Employment enquiries can be directed to hr@abec.com

“This investment is a key component of ABEC’s broader strategy to deliver integrated process solutions on a global basis.  The Fermoy facility will increase our capacity and allow us to better support our growing customer base in Ireland and Europe.  We sincerely appreciate the support of the IDA as we establish our unique capabilities in Ireland,” said ABEC’s CEO Scott Pickering

Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Richard Bruton TD, who met senior ABEC executives on a recent investment mission to the USA to discuss this project, said “Engineering and manufacturing companies form a key part of the Government’s Action Plan for Jobs. A large part of the reason we have targeted companies in this area in particular is because of their potential to invest in regional locations. I know from our recent meeting in Pennsylvania that ABEC is a first rate company, and today’s announcement that it is investing in Fermoy with the creation of 100 jobs is a huge boost. Here is a company deciding to invest in a regional area of high unemployment, in a facility left vacant in a devastating 2007 job loss announcement – a great example of what we are trying to achieve with our jobs plan. I wish Scott and his team every success with this project”.

IDA CEO Martin Shanahan also welcomed the announcement: “This is terrific news for the town of Fermoy and the wider North Cork region. ABEC’s location in Fermoy followed an extensive national property search which IDA was heavily involved in and happy to assist with. I am delighted that it has culminated in this news today that the company is to set up in Fermoy with the provision of 100 jobs. I wish them every success in the future.”
