Meat Authenticity Proficiency Testing from FAPAS
Apr 06 2013
The detection of undeclared horse meat present in processed foods in the UK now has a far-reaching effect internationally. The network of food production now requires laboratories in all countries to be vigilant in testing for contamination of products with horse, pork or other undeclared meats.
To support these laboratories’ quality assurance, the Food Analysis Performance Assessment Scheme (FAPAS®), offered by Fera, has extended its range of meat authenticity proficiency tests specifically to address the current food analysis issue.
The new test combines the detection for the presence of horse or pork in raw meat and processed food matrices. Participants receive several items which must be analysed for contamination and return their results by the set deadline. Laboratories will be assessed on their ability to correctly detect which test items contain the contamination.
Participants are free to use whichever method they routinely use and can additionally submit details of their method, as well as their detection results. Successful participation can be used by laboratories in support of their formal accreditation or other quality assurance system.
This proficiency test is due to start in April 2013 but FAPAS has a continuous programme of tests throughout the year. Further specific horse and pork meat contamination proficiency tests will be programmed. FAPASsupplies proficiency test samples to thousands of laboratories in over 100 countries.
