Countdown to Lab Innovations 2021
Oct 25 2021
The UK’s biggest trade show for the laboratory industry is only a week away
Lab Innovations, the UK’s largest trade exhibition for the laboratory industry, returns this year to bring together the industry’s leading professionals, scientists, researchers and more for the first time in 2021. On 3-4 November 2021, at the NEC, Birmingham, the show will open its doors with a bigger floor space than ever before, showcasing innovations from sectors including chemicals, pharmaceuticals, life sciences, food and drink, cleanrooms, sustainability and more.
After so long apart during the coronavirus pandemic, Lab Innovations offers the UK’s laboratory industry a chance to come together and showcase their latest innovations and drive business once again. Lab Innovations, celebrating its ninth edition this year, will focus on cutting-edge digital tech that increases laboratory sustainability and efficiency.
The COVID-19 pandemic had a big impact on workplaces, particularly for industries like food and drink labs that have had to overcome challenges like lockdowns, social distancing and increased health and safety requirements. Through trial and error, new technology and processes emerged.
At the event, attendees will be able to discover the latest lab tech, source a vast range of products under one roof and gain insight into data-driven case studies, like those from Green Light Laboratories, which demonstrate the impact of sustainable initiatives in the lab.
“The sheer volume of equipment that generates heat, containment and exhaust devices and essential uninterrupted power supplies to protect irreplaceable experiments in a lab means that a facility typically consumes five times more energy and water per square foot than a standard office building,” explained Andy Evans, Director of Lab Sustainability Consultancy Green Light Laboratories. “By presenting the audience at Lab Innovations with the most recent data on lab equipment sustainability, I hope to encourage lab operators to disrupt their current setup of products and processes to be more sustainable.”
Exhibitors are looking forward to launching their latest products and showcasing ground-breaking innovations at the 2021 show. Among the exhibitors are Anton Paar, Cole-Parmer, CEM Microwave Technology, IKA, NOVACYT, Eppendorf UK, VWS UK, Julabo, Sartorius, and Scientific Laboratory Supplies. The list also includes exciting newcomers like Mettler Toledo, Edwards Vacuum, TMQA and BMM Weston.
“I’m really looking forward to the industry getting back together, so we can’t wait for the UK’s biggest lab tech shop-window to open again in November,” commented Jaqueline Balian, Head of Laboratory Sector at Gambica. “I’m excited to see what our innovative and forward-looking industry comes up with.”
“It’s an opportunity to talk to different people and see cutting edge and new stuff that’s going on in the laboratory innovations field,” explained Jeremy Parker, Senior Principal Scientist at AstraZeneca. “It’s an opportunity to interact with suppliers and talk about opportunities to try new things in labs.”
Keynote speakers include Timandra Harkness, science writer, broadcaster and comedian as well as Mark Miodownik, professor of materials and society and director of institute of making at University College London. Other confirmed speakers include Andy Evans, director of lab sustainability consultancy Green Light Laboratories, and Martin Farley, sustainable labs advisor at University College London and health schools sustainability manager at Kings College London, Richard Robinson from Agilent Technologies and many more.
“This year’s show is going to be particularly special because it will be a much-needed opportunity for the scientific community to network face-to-face after such a long time apart,” said Aleiya Lonsdale, Head of Marketing at Easyfairs, the organiser of Lab Innovations.
To add to the excitement, this year’s exhibition will feature a brand-new Lab Awards event. These prestigious awards highlight the key achievements of the laboratory industry, recognising the incredible work of individuals, suppliers and projects, and will be handed out in the show’s VIP lounge, sponsored by Analytix, on 3 November.
Lab Innovations is taking extra health and safety precautions this year to ensure attendees can experience the event, attend the conference sessions and see the latest products and innovations in a safe environment. These include requiring proof of double vaccination or a negative lateral flow test to gain entry to the show, increased cleaning procedures using hospital-grade disinfectants and making hand sanitisers readily available both on the exhibition floor and in conference theatres.
Furthermore, steps have been taken to limit any unnecessary contact during the show. These include requiring attendees to register online and either bring a printout of their voucher or an e-copy on their mobile phone and scan the barcode at its touchless stations. Digital smart badges will also be used to limit contact by enabling you to gather product and exhibitor information throughout the event with a simple swipe.
“We’ve invested in a range of solutions, from increased hygiene procedures to technology designed to limit unnecessary physical contact, to preserve the health and wellbeing of our staff and visitors in every way possible. So far, this has created a high level of confidence in our exhibitors and visitors who have pre-registered interest in attending, which is already justifying my belief that this will be our best event yet,” concluded Lonsdale.
Finally, this year’s Lab Innovations exhibition is co-located with Advanced Engineering, the UK’s largest annual engineering show, giving attendees the chance to visit both shows. This means that exhibitors at Lab Innovations can easily arrange meetings with Advanced Engineering’s 300+ exhibitors, reinforcing cross-sector collaboration.
“The scientific community can’t wait to meet and engage in person once again,” added Alison Willis, Divisional Director of Easyfairs. “Bringing together so much talent inevitably creates the conditions for the next big ideas in the business to take form and grow, and who would miss an opportunity like that? Lab Innovations is certainly an unmissable event.”
