Accelerating the cell culture workflow for experimental success

May 04 2016

Olympus cell culture solutions bring a host of benefits to the complete workflow, with efficiency being key. Laying the foundations for experimental success throughout life science, Olympus’ range includes dedicated microscopes, cell confluency checker software and cell counters.

An effective and efficient cell culture process brings success to many application areas throughout life science and the pharmaceutical industry, from cancer research to regenerative medicine. In addition to accuracy and standardisation, the Olympus range of cell culture solutions also streamlines the complete cell culture workflow. While speed and efficiency maintains culture health by minimising the time cells remain outside optimum incubation conditions, fast operation also frees up time for scientists to focus on other tasks.

Streamlining routine observation

Success in cell cultivation arises from insightful observation and workflow efficiency, and the latest dedicated microscopy systems for cell culture observation have incorporated a number of features to support this. With the latest optics, the Olympus CKX53 cell culture microscope facilitates fast and efficient screening, with a large field number expanding the field of view. This allows easy inspection of multiwell plates, which can now be observed in a single view. A new integrated Phase Contrast (iPC) technology also removes the need to individually change the ring slit when switching from 4X-40X objectives, allowing fast and high contrast observation of phase objects under the most insightful conditions. Moreover, enhancing observation of thicker samples such as induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cell colonies, the new Olympus inversion contrast (IVC) technique extends phase contrast to generate clear, artefact-free images with enhanced 3D information.

Maintain culture health with fast passaging

In addition to observing cellular health, microscopic analysis informs the scientist when cultures are ready to passage. To facilitate this process, advances in software technology have now provided fast and accurate confluency measurements with the Olympus CKX-CCSW cell confluency checker software. Generating quantifiable cell growth data also enables scientists to quickly create an accurate log, without having to dissociate adherent cells. However, once cells are dissociated for passaging, downstream experimentation or storage, accurate in-solution cell counting is an essential next step. Traditionally, this count is achieved manually with the hemocytometer. However, this slow and laborious technique introduces variations due to human error. A modern alternative is automated cell counting, and the benchtop Olympus Cell Counter Model R1 creates an accurate cell count report in just 15 seconds that can be stored and exported, for streamlining, standardising and documentation.

From routine observation to passaging, with Olympus’ cell culture solutions, scientists are supported in perfecting a fast and efficient workflow necessary to achieve successful life science experiments and regenerative medicine applications.
