Accelerating Novel Cancer Therapies with Tumoroid Culture Medium
Jul 03 2023
Thermo Fisher Scientific has announced the launch of the Gibco™ OncoPro™ Tumoroid Culture Medium Kit, the first commercially available culture medium designed specifically for expanding patient-derived tumoroids or cancer organoids from multiple cancer indications.
Despite ongoing efforts, cancer continues to be a leading global cause of death, with a significant number of drug candidates (up to 97%) failing in clinical trials. To address this challenge, patient-derived tumoroids, which closely resemble donor tissue compared to traditional 2D cell models, offer potential in improving clinical trial success rates. These tumoroids are cultures of tumour cells obtained from individual patients, enabling researchers to better model diseases and predict patient responses to therapeutics in vitro. However, the use of tumoroids in cancer research has been limited due to complex culture requirements and a lack of commercially available media systems. Thermo Fisher's newly introduced off-the-shelf, modular tumoroid culture medium kit aims to make these complex cancer models more accessible to researchers.
Thermo Fisher remains committed to supporting scientists as they develop tumoroid workflows and protocols. In addition to making the OncoPro Tumoroid Media system accessible, they offer Tumoroid Assay Development Services for outsourced screening and characterisation. Customers can also utilise seven unique OncoPro Tumoroid Cell Lines representing four different cancer indications, including colorectal, lung, endometrial, and breast. The OncoPro Tumoroid Culture Medium Kit incorporates a scalable, automation-compatible suspension culture method for improved ease of use.
Aligned with Thermo Fisher's mission to make the world healthier, cleaner, and safer, the OncoPro Tumoroid Culture Medium Kit will not require a license for commercial use.
