Water Purification Company Reaches 75th Birthday Milestone

Elga is celebrating its 75th anniversary. Founded in 1937 by Walter Lorch, Elga originally manufactured domestic electrical & gas appliances, but soon moved into water purification, driven by the problem of limescale in steam irons caused by hard water. Lorch developed a small deioniser to purify water and prevent limescale formation, and realised the technology had great potential in other applications, notably research laboratories.

From those first years as a family-run business, Elga has become a global leader in water purification with a wide range of products for laboratory, healthcare and clinical applications. It holds 18 patents worldwide, and has been awarded a number of international design awards.

Elga’s headquarters, which includes R&D, product development, testing and manufacturing, is in Lane End, near High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire its base since 1959. Today, as part of Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies, Elga is a centre of excellence supplying and supporting sister companies and distributors in over 60 countries around the world – including Elga Process Water in the UK.

Even in the early days, sustainability was an important consideration, with the development of deionisation cartridges that were returned to the factory to be recharged rather than thrown away.

Today, all products are designed to have the lowest possible impact on the environment at all stages – manufacture, in service and at end of life.
