Maximising Efficiency at -80°C: Join the 2023 International Freezer Challenge
Feb 08 2023
Join the effort to improve cold storage sustainability
Global warming is a pressing issue for humanity, recently highlighted by events in Sharm el-Sheikh. While addressing this challenge requires collective action at the UN level, individuals can also make a difference. Conversations about sustainability often focus on energy consumption, and laboratory equipment is no exception. Despite being energy efficient, ultra-low temperature freezers still consume a considerable amount of energy to maintain a constant temperature of -80°C 24/7 for years.
The Freezer Challenge 2023, aimed at recognising the most sustainable cold storage solutions, is back and brought to you by the non-profit organisation My Green Lab and the International Institute for Sustainable Laboratories (I2SL).
Join the Freezer Challenge 2023 and earn points by implementing good management practices, fine-tuning temperatures, and sharing information about efficient practices. The challenge rewards those who make the greatest contribution to energy conservation and improved sample storage. By optimising your own refrigeration equipment, you'll be part of a larger effort to raise awareness about energy use in the laboratory.
The Freezer Challenge has made a significant impact since its launch in 2017, leading to a global savings of over 24 million KWh of electricity through improved cold storage practices.
Eppendorf is committed to environmental sustainability and has shown this commitment by supporting the International Freezer Challenge every year since 2018, marking the 6th consecutive year of support."
