Emc2012 –open and active
Apr 05 2012
Welcome to emc2012
“Our aim is to make the 15th European Microscopy Congress the most inclusive event yet in the history of the series.”
The UK microscopy community looks forward to welcoming you to Manchester in September 2012. With an international conference of the highest quality sitting alongside Europe's largest exhibition dedicated to microscopy, it promises to be a truly memorable event.
Added to this will be great training opportunities, a programme of technical workshops, and a full social programme. Put the date in your diary and start looking forward to a true festival of microscopy in one of the UK’s most exciting and vibrant cities.

Plenary Speakers
The conference organisers are delighted that the following speakers have accepted invitations to give plenary talks -
Prof. Christian Colliex, CNRS Research Director at the Electron Microscopy Group at the Solid State Physics Laboratory in Orsay.
Prof. Peter Dobson, Director of Oxford University’s Begbroke Science Park, and Professor at Queen’s College Oxford.
Prof. Andreas Engel, Director of the Department of Neurophysiology and Pathophysiology at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf.
Prof. Scott Fraser, Professor of Biology, and Director of the Biological Imaging Centre at the Beckman Institute at the California Institute of Technology.
Prof. Jeff Lichtman, Professor of Molecular and Cellular Biology at Harvard.
Prof. Daniel Shechtman, Philip Tobias Professor of Materials Science at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology, and 2011 Chemistry Nobel Prize Laureate.
Prof. Tony Wilson, Head of the Scanning Optical Microscopy Group, and Professor of Engineering at the University of Oxford.
The emc2012 scientific programme embraces light and electron microscopy and spectroscopy across both the life and physical sciences, along with scanning probe and flow cytometry techniques. The conference sessions provide an unparalleled opportunity for delegates who will be able to immerse themselves in their own area of interest, but they will also be exposed to a range of new techniques and tools that might benefit their current work, or that could feature in their careers in the future.
Anyone who is active in microscopy and related techniques should find sessions of interest.
Both the Congress news area and the exhibitor news area of the emc2012 news site are now live and accepting news items.
The 15th European Microscopy Congress is organised by the Royal Microscopical Society in co-operation with the European Microscopy Society, under the auspices of the International Federation of Societies for Microscopy

International Micrograph Competition
The Royal Microscopical Society’s biennial International Micrograph Competition has been launched. This highly respected event will culminate with the winners being announced at emc2012.
You could win one of the following prizes; £100 Cash, iPod Nano, iPad, Compact Digital Camera with Carl Zeiss lens, Portable Hard Drive
“This competition goes from strength to strength,” says Dr John Hutchison, a former President of the Society and a regular judge. “We receive entries from all over the world, and the standard is very, very high. It is a great opportunity for microscopists to showcase their skills and their work, and it provides an outlet for those that can capture the breathtaking and engaging beauty of the microscopical world.”
The winning images will appear in high-circulation publications, providing great exposure for the successful entrants.
“This competition goes way beyond 'coffee table' pictures and this makes it special,” adds Professor Chris Hawes, another former President of the Society and previous competition judge. “We look for images that have a scientific quality as well as outstanding aesthetic appeal. This provides us with truly eye-catching displays.”
The competition has four categories; Electron Microscopy - Physical Science, Electron Microscopy - Life Science, Light Microscopy - Physical Science, and Light Microscopy - Life Science.
The short-listed entries will be on view throughout emc2012. The closing date is 30th June 2012.
Entries should be submitted online where and the Terms and Conditions of entry are available.
