Reducing the Cost of Automated Cell Counting

Nov 21 2019

One of the major problems with automated cell counters is the high volume of plastic, biohazardous waste. The real cost of using single use, disposable slides and waste disposal is always underestimated yet over the year this will run into several thousands of pounds which could be used more effectively elsewhere. Scientific Laboratory Supplies (SLS) have recently introduced, to the UK, a unique slide washing and drying system which is designed to significantly reduce laboratory running costs, improve sustainability and improve analytical performance as it has now been found that even new, unused slides should be washed prior to use. The iWash™ Slide Cleaner is designed and manufactured by Imrali Inventions in the UK and is available in different configurations so as to be compatible with all major automated cell counters. Used slides are cleaned and ready for the next sample in less than 30 seconds with no compromise in performance. Even old slides may be recovered and used again.

Colleen Holgate, Marketing Manager at SLS states that “iWash™ is the easiest system I have ever used and produces clean slides in seconds. iWash™ ticks all the boxes regarding cost reduction, sustainability and process improvement”.

The global market for single–use plastic slides for automated cell counters is reported to be around $1.17 billion, with a compound annual growth of about 6.0%. Therefore as an end user cost-saving device iWash™ occupies a unique niche in this marketplace as no other technology is available for this application.

With a return on investment in typically three months iWash™ is a very cost effective solution to addressing a major need with respect to automated cell counting.
