Making RTIL research easier with non-contact viscometry

A number of Room-Temperature Ionic Liquids (RTILs) are occupying the attention of researchers worldwide thanks to their intrinsic conductivity, wide electrochemical window, and negligible vapour pressure, which together make them exceedingly attractive solvent candidates for electrochemical applications. Engineering the chemical structure of RTILs to enhance their application-relevant physicochemical properties is a major endeavour, requiring the testing of viscosity and moisture content as part of the process. Measuring the viscosity of RTILs often requires a method that maintains a certain gaseous atmosphere (e.g. argon-saturated), and prevents the introduction of moisture into the sample, and this is achievable with KEM’s EMS-1000S Viscometer because it uses sample tubes that can be hermetically sealed.

The EMS-1000S calculates viscosity after quantifying the rotational dynamics of a sample-immersed spherical probe spun using Lorentz forces. This means non-contact measurement is achievable, preventing cross-contamination. What’s more, the measurement method enables low-volume measurement (minimum: 90μL) and sample reuse. The instrument’s heating/cooling system quickly and stably controls sample temperature to between 0 and 200°C, and it comes with convenient measurement protocols for temperature, concentration and shear-rate dependence of viscosity studies. It has a wide measurement range of 0.1 to 1,000,000 mPa·s (cP), measuring with high accuracy and repeatability, even at super-low viscosities. With a successful history of satisfying the viscosity and moisture analysis needs of prominent electrochemistry labs, KEM is confident that they can help you too.
