SurPASS 3 Makes Waves in Zeta Potential Determination

Apr 30 2024

In March 2024, the new standard ISO 13100 titled "Methods for zeta potential determination – Streaming potential and streaming current methods for porous materials" was published. This standard describes the method of streaming potential measurement. The latter forms the basis of the Anton Paar measuring instrument SurPASS 3.

The standard document specifies methods for the zeta potential determination in porous materials that are saturated with a liquid where the pores are readily accessible. There is no restriction on the value of the zeta potential, nor on the porosity of the porous material. A pore is assumed to be on the scale of hundreds of micrometers, or smaller, without any restriction to pore geometry.

The document covers the applications of alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC) methods using aqueous media as wetting liquids. This effectively makes the SurPASS 3 the new standard for measuring zeta potential in porous materials.

With the SurPASS 3, solid surface charge analysis is now easier than ever before. The instrument facilitates direct analysis of the zeta potential at the solid/liquid interface by measuring streaming potential and streaming current. This allows access to the full range of zeta potential of materials, down to a few millivolts, at unprecedented reliability and reproducibility.

Thanks to the intuitive SurPASS 3 software, users can perform single point zeta potential measurements in less than two minutes. SurPASS 3 allows you to study pH dependences of zeta potential and reveals the isoelectric point for a deep understanding of your sample’s surface chemistry

The modular setup can also be tailored to your specific needs. The SurPASS 3 is just as versatile as your applications. Dedicated solutions are available for membrane applications, biomaterials, cosmetics, detergents, semiconductors and many more. Whether you are working on porous materials, such as membranes, or non-porous films and plates, particles >25 µm, granular material, fibers, or materials which can swell or are conductive, there are almost no restrictions. The modular setup of the measuring cells allows you to easily extend your zeta potential analysis to cover tomorrow’s needs.

SurPASS 3: Everything you need to know

The SurPASS 3 features zeta potential analysis of macroscopic solids under real-life conditions. Like an electrokinetic analyzer, it employs the classic streaming potential and streaming current method for a direct analysis of the surface zeta potential. The zeta potential is related to the surface charge at a solid/liquid interface and is a key parameter for understanding surface properties and developing new specialized materials. Key features of the instrument include:

  • More than 15 elaborate measuring cells accommodate samples of all geometries, ranging from powders and fibers to planar solids
  • Liquid-on-solid surface adsorption kinetics can also be followed in real-time on model surfaces and on your actual sample
  • Automated pH scan and detection of the isoelectric point
