Replacing Traditional Gas Supply Sources

Most users will be aware of the dangers associated with combustible gas cylinders but nevertheless accept them because they have been used in laboratories for a very long time. However, traditional supply methods have become inconvenient as the capacity for gas increases with the latest LCMS systems, many consuming up to 1,200 litres of nitrogen per hour at atmospheric pressure during API operation. This is equivalent to the consumption of a large cylinder of nitrogen per day which would be inconvenient for long sample runs or a high throughput laboratory where instrument uptime, cost and convenience are key factors.

The gas requirements for LCMS systems are often taken for granted and not appreciated or understood until results are analysed. Only then, it becomes apparent that poor quality nitrogen can be responsible, either for background interference that can reduce the detection capabilities of the system, or in some cases, the introduction of contaminants that can be difficult and costly to remove from the mass spectrometer. With continual improvement in instrument performance, the limits of detection are being pushed even further as scientists strive to realise the potential of the latest LCMS Technology. Quality and consistency of the nitrogen supply will therefore continue to play an important role.

Generation of clean, dry, phthalate free nitrogen from laboratory air involves several discrete processes which separate the components of air into its constituent gases.
