New and Innovative Chromatography Media
Sep 27 2017
Since 1911 MACHEREY-NAGEL stands for innovation, high quality and reliability in analytical chemistry and life science. MN offers a broad range of products for chromatography, filtration, rapid tests, water analysis and bioanalysis as one of today’s leading manufacturers in these fields.
MN´s expertise in manufacturing of chromatography media is based on many years of experience in silica technology. The development of the spherical HPLC silica NUCLEOSIL® and the introduction of commercially available ready-to-use TLC plates and sheets are just two milestones emphasising the pioneering tasks of MN in promoting these separation techniques, which today are omnipresent in analytical labs all over the world.
In September 2017 MN introduced their latest development for solid-phase extraction – CHROMABOND® HLB. This hydrophilic-lipophilic balanced polymeric SPE adsorbent is specially designed for the enrichment of hydrophilic analytes from polar matrices like water, blood serum or food. With classical C18/C8 modified silica, even with modern hydrophobic polymer adsorbents, retention is often difficult. Linked hydrophilic groups of the HLB copolymer interact with polar functional groups of the analytes while the lipophilic backbone interacts with nonpolar hydrocarbon residues to provide enhanced retention. A broad range of columns, cartridges and 96-well plates packed with CHROMABOND® HLB adsorbent can be applied for a wide range of applications (e.g., pesticides from water, pharmaceuticals from serum, antibiotics from honey).
The latest launches, CHROMABOND® PL for the removal of phospholipids and CHROMABOND® Carbon A for analysing acrylamide in drinking water, complement the steadily growing range of innovative SPE media. For more information, visit www.mn-net.com/SPE.
The hydrophobic HPLC phase NUCLEODUR® C18 Gravity-SB with its distinct polar selectivity is ideal for method development, because it shows better retention of early eluting compounds. Overall sophisticated analytical separations, especially for polar compounds (e.g., antibiotics, water-soluble vitamins, organic acids), are recommended applications.
The recently introduced biphenyl phase NUCLEODUR® π2, provides new options to improve selectivity for aromatic and unsaturated compounds (e.g., steroids, sulfonamides, tetracyclines). The innovative separation mode of the HPLC phase is based on two retention mechanisms – π-π interactions and hydrophobic interactions.
In order to meet the growing demands on saving analysis time and solvent costs, MACHEREY-NAGEL expanded the portfolio by adding core-shell silica phases with 2.7 and 5 µm particle size. NUCLEOSHELL® reversed phase and HILIC columns enable significantly shorter run times at moderate column back pressures and set new efficiency standards in research and quality control. But can thin-layer chromatography be innovative? For about 50 years MACHEREY-NAGEL has been manufacturing glass plates, as well as aluminium and plastic sheets coated with silica gels and other adsorbents for TLC and HPTLC. Until today, the glass plates SIL G-25 with and without UV indicator as well as the ALUGRAM® Xtra SIL G aluminium sheets are very important TLC products which are often used in scientific laboratories, but also in clinical, pharmaceutical, natural product and food analyses.
Yes, TLC can be innovative. The application of large volumes of very dilute samples can cause irregular spreading of substance spots, which complicates evaluation. The innovative TLC glass plates SILGUR-25 and the aluminium sheets ALUGRAM® Xtra SILGUR – silica-coated plates or sheets with a concentrating zone of inactive kieselguhr – solve this problem by concentrating sample spots on the layer.
The latest TLC development, Channel-Plates SILGUR-25-C UV254 with 19 channels, helps to prevent cross contamination by sectioning several samples. More samples can be separated on a plate, and spot areas can be more easily determined. For more information, visit www.mn-net.com/TLC.
