RIP-OFF BRITAIN

Popcorn, fuel and latte found to be worst rip-offs in the UK

CINEMAGOERS are being "ripped off" on their treats as popcorn has been found to be the most overpriced, according to research.

Three in five Brits (59 per cent) say it is unreasonably priced, while other cinema snacks, like drinks and sweets, come in second at 52 per cent.

Takeaway coffee, fuel and over-the-counter branded medication are other items that Brits consider the most overpriced, according to a survey on consumer goods by discount website VoucherCodes.co.uk.

People were also fed up with forking out too much for bottled water and items in a hotel minibar.

While 40 per cent of Brits expect to be fleeced at motorway service stations, according to the survey of just over 2,000 adults.

Yet many continue to buy overpriced items - in some cases unnecessarily - with 39 per cent of people aged 18-24 saying they will always them.

The most over-priced items

HOW many Brits think they're overpaying for their consumer goods.

  1. Popcorn - 59 per cent
  2. Other cinema snacks - 52 per cent
  3. Hotel mini bar drinks and snacks - 37 per cent
  4. Fuel - 26 per cent
  5. Printer ink - 23 per cent
  6. Smartphones - 22 per cent
  7. Over-the-counter branded medication - 20 per cent
  8. Tobacco - 17 per cent

In comparison, just 18 per cent of those aged above 55 said they'll still buy overpriced items, while 22 per cent said they would never do so.

Of course, some of the high prices can be avoided by preparing in advance.

For example, instead of buying your treats at the cinema, you can pick them up from your local supermarket and bring them in.

More and more retailers now also provide water fountains to fill up your empty bottles for free, so there's no need to buy a new one every time.

Meanwhile, to find the best deals on smartphones and tobacco, it's always worth shopping around before you splash out.

Anita Naik, of VoucherCodes.co.uk, said: "There is a clear consensus among Brits as to which products we find most annoying in terms of price.

"Yet, we’ve also found that many of us admit to regularly purchasing everyday items, such as takeaway coffee, despite considering them far too expensive."

Holidaymakers are also being fleeced by high street stores like Boots and Superdrug over travel-sized toiletries.

While a mum-of-four has accused Argos of "daylight robbery" after proving the retailer is charging more than double the price of other shops for the same toys.

Plus, restaurant insiders have revealed the dishes you're paying too much for.
