How EOS uses Verder Scientific equipment in their additive manufacturing processes

EOS, a leading player in industrial 3D printing of metals and plastics, relies on Verder Scientific equipment for quality control. They use an ELTRA Elemental ONH-p Analyzer to spot tiny amounts of oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen in powders and solid parts. For material preparation, two QATM polishers are used to subsequently check the density of powders and solid components. To boost quality further, they use a CARBOLITE GERO furnace for heat treatment. This meticulous approach ensures EOS products shine in the 3D printing market.

CARBOLITE GERO Debinding, Sintering, Heat Treatment

CARBOLITE GERO is a renowned manufacturer of furnaces, with extensive experience in the heat treatment of MIM parts and also operating in the field of additive manufacturing and powder metallurgy. We offer solutions for catalytic and thermal debinding of all types of components. For this we rely on our proven EBO and GLO furnace series. For final finishing in the residual debinding and sintering step, we recommend the HTK furnace series, the undisputed number one in this field.

For components produced by laser melting, we offer specially adapted products. For uncomplicated materials in an inert gas atmosphere, the robust GPCMA inert gas furnace series with suitable furnace chamber dimensions is an ideal choice. For more demanding high vacuum applications, our V-L furnace series which is optimized for stress relief annealing is available.

ELTRA Elemental Analysis

ELTRA develops combustion analyzers for precise and sensitive CHNOS determination in solids.

The quality control of the metal powders used for powder metallurgical processes is important to ensure a high-quality end product. A typical example is measuring the carbon content in steel, e.g. with ELTRA‘s CS analyzers, as this considerably influences the hardness of the final product.

During the sintering process, unwanted chemical elements like oxygen from air (corrosion) or hydrogen from moisture (hydrogen embrittlement) may degrade the quality of the product so that these should be analyzed, too.

QATM Materialographic Preparation Process

QATM manufactures machines for materialography (metallography) and hardness testing used in quality control processes.

Metal parts require thorough testing, for instance after the sintering process. QATM’s wide range of high-quality machines for cutting, polishing and etching allow for a perfect surface preparation as prerequisite for reliable microstructural analysis.

Thanks to automated solutions, such as the innovative precision Cut-off Machine Qcut 200 A, sample preparation is convenient and reproducible.

The new modular Hot Mounting Press Qpress 50 is used to prepare specimens which are easier to handle in the subsequent grinding and polishing process.

.

QATM Hardness Testing

Hardness testing in powder metallurgy requires completely different parameters and procedures compared to classic hardness testing applications. Samples have to be prepared well to enable the hardness test. Powder has to be embedded in resin, e. g. with a hot mounting press, and afterwards the materialographic specimen has to be polished to obtain a clean surface for hardness testing.

For proving the quality of powder materials a powerful Vickers micro hardness tester like the Qness 60 M EVO is the perfect solution.

RETSCH Size Reduction & Particle Size Analysis

RETSCH provides size reduction and sieving equipment designed for sample preparation and characterization of solids.

In the field of powder metallurgy RETSCH instruments contribute to the recycling of raw materials. Sieve shakers like the Vibratory Sieve Shaker AS 200 basic are used to separate those metal powder particles into fractions which are left after the 3D printing process – so that the fraction with the fine particles may be reused for the next printing process.

RETSCH also offers size reduction equipment like the powerful Jaw Crusher BB 500 which is suitable for pulverizing incorrect green bodies or hard metal parts produced by Metal Injection Molding. The obtained powder is then returned to the production process.

MICROTRAC MRB Particle Characterization

Powders used for additive manufacturing must meet the highest quality standards.

Microtrac MRB offers two methods for particle characterization of metal powders: Laser Diffraction and Dynamic Image Analysis. Both methods provide a size distribution, but only imaging methods also detect the particle shape which is crucial for the suitability of a powder for additive manufacturing.

The CAMSIZER X2 is a dedicated image analysis instrument with a wide measurement range from 0.8 µm to 8 mm that delivers results of highest reliability thanks to the unique Dual Camera Technology.

The SYNC analyzer combines the versatility of laser diffraction with the sensitivity and accuracy of image evaluation in an innovative way.

The BELSORP MINI X determines the surface area by mass as specific surface area (m²/g). This is an important parameter in the characterization and evaluation of metal powders.
