Electric Vehicles Focused on to Help Improve Cities Air Quality and Reduce Green House Gas Emissions

Jul 13 2012

A new report from GlobalData (UK) highlights the need for Governments worldwide to encourage the use of Electric Vehicles in order to reduce the growing Green House Gas emissions and improve the air quality in our cities.

The urge to switch from fossil fuels to renewable, sustainable and above all green energy sources has led to changes in energy generation, particularly in the transportation sector.

According to the International Transport Forum, 98% of the transportation sector is dependent on fossil fuels for its energy. The transportation sector contributes around 23% of global CO2 emissions.

Electric Vehicle adoption is where many policy makers and governments are focusing their efforts with incentives available in many countries for purchasing one. The electric vehicle market is growing too with many vehicles available at reasonable prices and suited towards commuting around cities. Recent research also shows electrical vehicles are more economical over their lifetime.

There are many however many reasons against using the currently available electrical vehicles however, with many only able to run on battery power limiting their use and length of journeys. This is also hindered by the lack of widespread charging points within the city limits. To overcome these issues manufacturers are looking to develop electric vehicles that travel further on a single battery charge or by developing ways to switch to gasoline once the battery charge has depleted. Other manufacturers are looking at more ingenious ways such as Toyota, who are installing solar panels to the roof of their hybrid electric vehicles.

Whether electric vehicles are the way forward has yet to be established but a solution to the question of how to clean up the air quality in our cities does need to be found.
