Is LPG Low Emissions?

Oct 25 2018

Vehicles today have been adapted to be much cleaner and better for the environment. But they’re still one of the biggest contributors to climate change. Vehicles that are converted to run on LPG, alone or with petrol, produce far less harmful emissions that traditional fuels.

In our LPG series, we’ve already taken a look at where the fuel comes from and how the conversion from petrol to LPG is done. In this post, we’re going to explore the environmental aspects of using LPG, as an alternative to traditional petrol.

Is LPG better for the environment?

We’re all aware of the negative impacts of conventionally powered vehicles being on the roads. Will switching to LPG make a difference to your carbon footprint? Or are the emissions just as bad?

Running your vehicle on LPG can reduce CO2 emissions by up to 20%, almost eliminating particulate emissions. Cars that run on liquified petroleum gas produce around 50% fewer nitrogen oxides than petrol, too.

Companies with large vehicle fleets are increasingly recognising the benefits of switching to LPG, saving huge amounts of expenses as well as reducing a business’s carbon footprint.

How clean are LPG engines?

LPG was originally introduced to the market as a clean-burning fuel. It appeals to a lot of people wanting to lower their carbon emissions, with a range of other benefits:

  • Reduced carbon monoxide emissions compared to petrol engines
  • Limited hydrocarbon emissions
  • Low emissions of toxic air contaminants
  • Low cold-start emissions
  • Sealed fuel system, meaning no evaporative and running losses
  • Improved emissions durability will not get worse with engine wear

LPG is also non-toxic, non-corrosive and free of tetraethyl lead and additives, which was outlawed in the UK in 2000.

Switching to LPG

Are you ready to take the plunge and convert your vehicle to LPG fuel? Make sure you read our previous post, about how vehicles are converted, for more information.
