SWIG EARLY CAREER RESEARCHER POSTER COMPETITION 2024

SWIG invites students and professionals in the field of water sensors to participate in our esteemed “Early Career Researcher Poster Competition”. This is an exceptional opportunity for budding researchers and newcomers in the water and environmental sectors to showcase their scientific prowess and innovative ideas.

The SWIG Early Career Researcher Poster Competition aims to spotlight technological advancements and novel applications in water measurements, fostering innovation in sensor research and commercial applications. The competition is open to all "early career researchers," including full-time students or individuals within their first five years of employment in their respective fields of expertise.

Authors of shortlisted posters will showcase their work at the WWEM exhibition on October 9th-10th, 2024. The top three finalists will be required to deliver a brief presentation on October 9th, 2024, at WWEM. Judging will be based on both the poster and presentation, with the winner announced at a gala dinner on October 9th, 2024.

Gala dinner attendance for the top three candidates will be funded by WWEM, and travel expenses (within the UK mainland) will be covered by SWIG.

Judging Criteria

• Is the work of professional relevance?
• Does the work demonstrate scientific rigour?
• Is the poster well presented (in terms of clarity, layout and readability)?
• Is the abstract a clear summary of the research?
• Is good use made of diagrams, photographs and illustrations?
• Does the work show evidence of originality?
• Was the project / work successful or worthwhile?

Conditions

• Posters should be submitted as high-resolution PDF files, formatted in A1 portrait size, and must be relevant to the topic of sensing the water environment. Entries may encompass practical applications, experimental research, or developments, provided they are based on original research.
• Each poster must be submitted alongside a succinct abstract (maximum 150 words) summarising the work
• The submission deadline is July 31st, 2024.
• Entrants must be within their first five years of employment in their respective fields of expertise.
• The poster must be the sole work of the author, though academic supervisors or colleagues may be acknowledged.
• By submitting an entry, participants agree to potential publication of their poster on the SWIG website and for promotion of future competitions by SWIG.
• The first prize is valued at £1,200, with second and third prizes at £500 and £200, respectively.
• The competition will be judged by a panel comprising SWIG Directors, with their decision deemed final. SWIG reserves the right to cancel the competition if necessary.
