Can Green Tech Meet 100% of the World’s Needs? Leonardo DiCaprio Says YES!

Jun 25 2015

The world is developing an increasing appreciation for green technology, and A-list actor Leonardo DiCaprio is the latest celebrity to endorse the revolution. He recently narrated environmental expose “Green World Rising,’ one of four short films created by environmental foundation, Tree Media.

Green World Rising is the third instalment in the series and explores how the world could be 100% free from fossil fuels in the next few decades. Instead of environmentally detrimental fuel, planet Earth will power itself using ‘green’ solutions.

“Human ingenuity working alongside Earth’s natural systems is building a new world that is sustainable and self-reliant,” DiCaprio explains in the film’s introduction. “By harnessing the elements of the sun, wind and waters we can move away from our dependence on fossil fuels, decentralise and create a sustainable economy that will support our modern civilisation long into the future.”

A star studded line up

As well as being narrated by Leonardo DiCaprio ‘Green World Rising’ was presented by Thom Hartmann, directed by Leila Conners and produced by George DiCaprio, Mathew Schmid, Earl Katz and Roee Sharon Peled.  Tree Media created the film, with support from The Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation. Stanford University professor of civil and environmental engineering Mark Jacobson also makes an appearance, simultaneously creating publicity his self-built foundation The Solutions Project that aims to transition all 50 US states to 100% renewable energy in the next few decades.

UN issues public warning

The quartet of short films was largely inspired by a leaked draft of a UN guide written for the upcoming climate summits. While the document is due to be published in early November sources have confirmed that the report states that climate change could have "serious, pervasive and irreversible" impacts on both humans and nature.

Making the switch to green technology

Plain and simple, fossil fuels simply aren’t a renewable resource. This means that inevitably, the world is going to bleed itself dry. The solution has long been pegged as renewable technology, and Tree Media is at the forefront of the revolution. The foundation has a vision of a creating a sustainable civilisation that runs on clean, Earth-friendly energy.

So what kinds of innovations are on the cards? Unsurprisingly, one of the key points is the fact that the electric car uprising needs to be fast-tracked ASAP. Houses and buildings will be heated with solar, wind, tidal and geothermal energy, jets will take to the skies powered by carbon negative biofuel made from algae while food will be produced on regenerative organic farms. The film paints an inspirational picture of a green and sustainable future that will support human life for centuries to come.

Innovation is the key to creating a greener, more eco-friendly future. Blue Mountain Biogas Plant Turns Pig Manure into Power discusses just one of America's latest green energy solutions, and how livestock waste could soon be used to generate clean energy.
